| Author | Subject: Wireless Network Config |
| Scott Brady Admin |
Some of our members have inquired about configuring wireless connections under Linux. Because most of us don't have (Linux) laptops we haven't been too helpful. Recently I learned about a program called iwconfig that allows you to configure a wireless card from the command line (essid, key, etc.). In Debian the program is available in the wireless-tools package. There are other iw* tools in the package (iwevent, iwgetid, iwlist, iwpriv, iwspy) that should also be useful for wireless card users. I hope our Linux laptop using members find this helpful. |

Here's one that beat me up for a bit: my wireless card wasn't recognized, and didn't have a driver. It turns out that there aren't a lot of Linux drivers for wireless cards. What to do? I found some software that (for a price? Is this Linux? would solve my problem, but I couldn't believe I couldn't do it for free. This brought me to a free solution called ndiswrapper. It makes Windows drivers into Linux drivers. With a little bit of configuration, my Fedora box runs wireless, no problem. -Rob Sgarlata |

What laptop do you have? I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 and am having some issues with the sound and getting the wireless going.I've found that FC4 runs as fast as WinXP does and have figured out some of the basics with it, I just need these two issues resolved before I stick with FC4. |

I've been looking for drivers for linux 4EVER!. The company who sells the part usually never actually has drivers for it - at least for linux. I've actually found parts that the company didn't support at all - even under Windows! |
