For some reason I cannot get programs to compile...I have reinstalled gcc
over and over again...I have also reinstalled Linux over and over again. I am
running Linux Mandrake 7.0

When I try to compile a program I get the following:

localhost... ./configure
loading cache./config.cache
checking for gcc . . . gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc) works . . . no
configure:error:installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot
create executables

Also how do I return to the Xwindow system from localhost....I have tried
typing startx but will not let me go to Xwindows

Any help would be appericated
