At this point, it's not clear if the problem is gcc or the configure
script. It may be a complicated program that needs manual tweaking.

Start with a smaller, simpler program. First compile the "hello,
world" program. That will tell you if the compiler is installed and
the libraries work.

Second, try compiling "less" from source. Less is pretty much self
contained and also uses gnu configure. Disk #2 of RedHat has source
rpm's (or else you can ftp it).


You can unpack the .rpm archive with:

rpm2cpio less-340-1.src.rpm | cpio -i -d

That will leave you with a tar file, less-340.tar.gz (your version
numbers may be different). Unpack the tar file, cd into the directory
and try "./configure" and then "make". I'm sure less will work, so if
it doesn't then you have something misconfigured with gcc.

But if less works, then the problem is in the program you're trying to
