The "uplink" port on a hub is so that you can cascade hubs when your network
outgrows the number of ports available on the hub. In other words, if I have
a 4-port hub with a separate uplink port, I can use the uplink to attach
another hub and continue to add to my network beyond the original 4 ports.
Keep in mind that some hubs have a port that is switchable between standard
and "uplink" mode, and that some hubs have no uplink port at all. To link
this type of hub to another one, you need what is referred to as a "crossover"
cable.

As to the "nice little bitty blue box", how much do they cost (so as to
compare with a used PC, for example)?
