Sounds to me like it's a VMware problem. I've played with it a bit, and
it's a cool product, but it's going to add a layer of troubleshooting
difficulty to problem resolution (like now). Have you tried VMware's
support options? It might be a known problem.

If you really need both Linux and Windows up at the same time, it might be
worth your while to just build a minimal network.
