Scot, regarding setting up RedHat 6.0 with a WinModem - -To the best of my
knowledge, no Linux distribution will function with a WinModem. I believe you
will find that you will be able to reduce the time spent and frustration
factor by purchasing a decent external 56k v.90 modem, as it can be connected
to a serial port and any Linux distribution will recognize it.
Also, you can go to and check out the hardware supported list.
I am not sure if all external modems will work correctly on RH 6.0, but I do
know that a Diamond Supra Express External 56k V.90 modem will work great on
RH 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, and Mandrake 7.0, 7.1.,7.2 and SuSe 6.4, 7.0 -- it will
also work great on Win98. The internal Supra Express IS NOT SUPPORTED and
WILL NOT WORK under Linux. Another area to be careful of and do plenty of
research before buying any is the video card - - not all are supported - - I
believe that all of the companies that distribute Linux have a hardware
supported database on their sites - - try and search those out always before
buying some hardware item that will only work under windows.
I just purchased a second Supra Express External modem last week at ComUSA - -
have used the first one for almost a year with no problems - -it was $79.99 +
Best Regards,
