I'm having some difficulties using dired (in emacs) when accessing files
via ftp on a particular machine. When I try to choose a file or
directory (by pressing enter when the cursor is on that line) I get
the error message "No file on this line." In addition, the file names
are not "highlighted" when I pass the mouse cursor over them.

I've found cryptic references to a regexp called
dired-move-to-filename. These references seem to imply that the
difficulty comes from the form of the directory listing on the machine
I'm trying to access, which looks like this

instead of the usual *nix format of this

-r-xr-xr-x 1 owner group 0 Nov 27 2000 dirmap.htm
dr-xr-xr-x 1 owner group 0 Feb 25 2000 kbhelp

and so the regexp can't determine where the filename is. (The flaw in
that argument is that if I put the cursor anywhere on a line and use
the arrow key to move to another line, the cursor jumps to the first
letter of the filename, so it *does* know where the filename is!)

Any suggestions about what's wrong or (even better) what I can do to get
it working?
