And I should have mentioned that netpipes is an alternative to netcat.
I think netpipes also supports SSL.

Plus, you can capture the output of a remote command with the rsh/rexec
tools. For example:

rsh -l user the.other.machine command arg ... >local_file

will run "command arg ..." on the remote machine and store its stdout
to local_file on the local machine. (If you wanted the i/o redirection
to apply to the remote machine, put the entire command in quotes so
the ">" gets passed to the remote machine.) This assumes you're
running the rexec tools and either you have .rhosts or else it's
interactive and you enter a password. Of course, there are security
issues.
