So much for the easy options. But let's check that your shell really
is bash. Try "echo $SHELL" and "type bash".

The next most likely place is your internet connection. Are you
logging in from home? What is your internet connection, PPP over
telephone modem or DHCP over cable modem? And when it drops the
telnet connection, is it just telnet that drops, or does the entire
internet connection go away?

It could be the telnet client or server, but from reading their man
pages, I can't even find an auto-logout setting. And it really is
telnet, not ssh or rlogin or other?
