There are many steps involved in printing, so it's difficult to pinpoint
the problem. And I don't use Mandrake or their GUI config tool, so I can
only offer general suggestions. But here are a couple things to consider.

What print tool do you use, LPRng or CUPS? Do you know what is the
native language for your printer? Try printing different types of
documents: plain text, postscript, etc. Ghostscript (gs) can convert
postscript to just about anything. Try converting a short postscript
file to your printer's native language and print that. And also try
cat'ing a file directly onto the printer device to see if that makes
any difference.

Lpr is based on print filters that convert the incoming document to
the correct format for your printer. I would guess that your setup is
not getting the correct conversion.
