I don't know what you mean by "sign on" here. You want the Linux
machine to run some server that you can access across the network?
What server (telnet? apache? mail? what?).

If you mean telnet, then authentication is controlled by the users,
accounts and passwords on the Linux machine. If you mean Samba (a way
of sharing files between Linux and Windows using SMB/NetBIOS), then I
can't advise you since I don't run Samba. But there is a Howto for
Samba.

And you shouldn't need to reinstall. From a running system, you can
add and remove packages and edit config files.
