First off, how did you configure X? In other words, what program did you use,
was it an X-based config program, or a console-based one?

Next, run the following command:

X -probeonly 2> X-probe.out

Then post the contents of X-probe.out here on the forum.

Finally, we may need to know the contents of the XF86Config-4 file, which is
often located in /etc/X11.

This will give us a much better idea of what the nature of the problem may be.
X configuration can sometimes be sticky, but with the above info, I bet we can
figure it out.
