Linux is an OS that clones the functionality and interface of Unix. And
although I stepped over the courtesy line, bear in mind that this forum is
specifically for Linux questions and answers. When you said that the machine
was for Windows, you placed yourself at cross-purposes with those of this
forum, thus the reason for my ire. However, I'll grant that at a hardware
level there is no difference, and as long as you're dealing with hardware,
I'll back off and apologize.

I still think you really are in over your head, though. PC hardware, although
it appears simple to the average user, is quite complicated once you open up
the box to start tinkering. If you're interested in setting up a cheap
Windows box, you really are better off selling the Compaq on e-bay and buying
a used box that already comes with a decent amount of memory and hard drive
space. Some places will even include an installed copy of Windows for you.
