So, 7.2 can write to the tape and 5.2 and 7.0 can read it, but 7.2
can't read what it has written? That's pretty bizarre. You could
try reading/writing the tape with dd to verify that the problem has
nothing to do with tar.

Anyway, it looks like the problem may be at the driver level. Sorry,
I don't have an IDE tape to experiment with this. Try Red Hat's web
site, see if they mention any changes to the driver. And try a
Google/linux search for your tape drive, see if anyone else mentions
the same problem. If the problem really is in the driver, someone may
have a kernel patch for it.
