Free? yes, there are some good ones. Check out cinelarra....
It has some other links to competitive packages also to check out.

Many biggest studios use Linux for video editing, compositing, and Linux
render farms for high speed creation of frames and effects. Commercial
packages used include things like Maya (3D rendering), matting software, and
some expensive proprietary systems built on Linux, and some ported from
SGI/Irix systems.
