The 3c509 and 3c905 use different drivers. Probably, you have
something like "alias eth0 3c509" in your /etc/modules.conf file.
Change 3c509 to 3c59x and reboot. The 3c59x driver covers the
3Com 590, 595 and 905 cards.

You probably also have an options line in there, maybe something like
"options 3c509 irq=10" or some such. Try it without the options line
(the 3c905 can probably auto probe what it needs). If that doesn't
work, then put in the options line with the correct values for the new
card.

The possible ethernet drivers are in some directory such as:

/lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/drivers/net

Modinfo will tell you something about each driver, for example:
"modinfo 3c59x" and "modinfo 3c509".
