You need a primary and secondary DNS server to list with the registrar of the
domain name. The DNS servers will track the actual static IP address of your
equipment and make your webserver live to the internet.

I would suggest that you do not host the site yourself on your own computer
unless you really want to practice. Especially if you will have that machine
on a local network and you do not have extensive firewall systems to protect
your network.

Setting up your own DNS server is a possibility too, but that sounds like
overkill for your situtation. Yes, your apache system can also be your DNS,
but you need to have a secondary DNS also.

mail.xxxxx.com, www.xxxxx.com, ftp.xxxx.com, etc.. are all entries in a DNS
zone file where you can have different first words that are redirected to
(sometimes) different servers - i.e. actual static IP addresses.
