I found the answer to my problem and maybe someone else will find it useful.
Problem was glidepad and stickpointer were not working on a Dell laptop
running RH9.

Was NOT necessary to download a driver. Not necessary to modify kernel.

Cure was to edit /etc/X11/XF86config.

This file needed the following code:

input term "ps2mouse" "CorePointer"
input term "Mouse0" "SendCoreEvents"

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "DevInputmice"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option Emulate3Buttons" "no"
End Section

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "ps2mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"
Option "Emulate3Timeout" "50"
EndSection
