At the September meeting someone asked if Debian has something similar to
Redhat’s Kickstart (automated installer/configuration) program. The answer
is quite definitely yes.

The base Debian package management tools are capable of replicating package
installations (but not configurations AFAIK):

current_box$ dpkg --get-selections * > packagelist
new_box$ dpkg --set-selections < packagelist
new_box$ apt-get dselect-upgrade

If you also want to handle configuration (you probably DO) in addition to
installation, then FAI (Fully Automatic Installation) will do both for you:

The website boasts that FAI is “similar but better than other tools like
kickstart for Red Hat” and we ALL know that if it’s on the Internet it MUST
be true.
